Fire Angel Leadership Weekend Case Study

In September 2025, the Fire Angel Leadership Weekend took place at Youlbury Scouting Centre, bringing together eight female Fire Cadets and the Fire Angel Leadership Team for the first time. Supported through the Uniformed Youth Fund, the weekend marked an important step in building a strong, values-led team as the cadets began preparation for a challenging expedition to Sweden.

The weekend was designed to foster connection, trust, and shared purpose, while equipping cadets with the skills and confidence needed for future training. A key focus was embedding the Fire Angel values of Respect, Resilience, Support, and Honesty into practical, hands-on experiences that encouraged reflection, teamwork, and personal responsibility.

Across the weekend, cadets took part in a range of experiential activities that balanced physical challenge with learning and discussion. Practical sessions included assembling expedition equipment, such as tents and cooking systems, helping cadets develop competence and confidence in essential outdoor skills. A tyre-dragging exercise simulated the physical demands of pulling sleds in cold environments, preparing cadets mentally and physically for endurance challenges they are likely to face on expedition.

Alongside the physical activities, structured values workshops explored how shared values influence behaviour, decision-making, and team dynamics. By linking values directly to challenging tasks, cadets were able to understand their relevance in real-world situations, strengthening resilience and reinforcing positive team behaviours.

The outcomes of the weekend were strongly positive. Cadets developed practical expedition skills and a clearer understanding of cold-environment preparedness. Stronger relationships formed between cadets and leaders, creating a foundation of trust and cohesion that will support future training. Both cadets and leaders demonstrated increased confidence and readiness for the next stages of the programme.

Learning from the weekend highlighted the impact of embedding values within physical challenges, the importance of early team-building, and the effectiveness of simulated expedition tasks in preparing cadets for real conditions.

Looking ahead, the Fire Angel team will reconvene for a second leadership weekend in November, building on the foundations laid at Youlbury and continuing preparation for the Sweden expedition.
