Launch of Hammerheads Explorer Unit, Castleford - Case Study

With support from the Uniformed Youth Fund (UYF), Pontefract and Castleford District has successfully launched a new Explorer Scout Unit (ESU), Hammerheads Explorers. The new Unit responds directly to increasing demand for Explorer‑age provision in the area and ensures more young people can continue their Scouting journey close to home.

Castleford and the surrounding area have a vibrant Scouting community, with seven active Scout Groups and existing Explorer Scout provision already operating at full capacity. As membership continued to grow, a waiting list emerged for young people aged 14–18, including several with additional needs and limited ability to travel to other parts of the area. With no ESU previously based in Castleford, it became clear that new, accessible local provision was essential.

Plans were developed to establish a sustainable new Unit capable of meeting immediate demand while supporting long‑term growth. Two experienced volunteers stepped forward to take on leadership roles, supported by targeted efforts to recruit additional adult volunteers. UYF funding enabled a series of high‑visibility recruitment and awareness‑raising activities aimed at both potential members and volunteers.

A public open day at Junction 32 shopping outlet featured interactive activities such as games, crafts, and displays, helping attract families and passers‑by. A window display in a vacant retail unit extended visibility throughout the summer holiday period. These activities were supported by coordinated communications across social media and local channels. The total cost was £450, covering materials and display resources, a low‑cost but impactful investment that generated strong interest from both young people and adults.

Hammerheads Explorers held its first meeting on 9 June, welcoming seven young people to an introductory session of games and programme planning. The Unit now meets on Sunday evenings, using local Scout and community spaces to ensure it remains flexible and accessible across the wider district.

With continued promotion, growing volunteer capacity, and an exciting programme ahead, including camps, skills sessions, and outdoor activities, Hammerheads Explorers is well placed to provide sustainable, inclusive Explorer provision for Castleford for years to come.
