Launch of Sea Cadet Division at Park Hall School, Birmingham Case Study
In May 2025, Park Hall School in Birmingham celebrated the launch of its own Sea Cadet division, marking an important milestone in youth development and community engagement within the local area. Supported by funding from DCMS, alongside Birmingham Stirling Sea Cadet Unit, the school’s Senior Leadership Team, and local partners, the new division provides young people with opportunities to build confidence, leadership, and essential life skills through structured, maritime-themed activities.
The division was established following a shared vision between Birmingham Stirling Sea Cadets, Park Hall School, and the Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC) Growth and Development Team. Together, they recognised the value of offering adventurous, character-building experiences beyond the classroom, aligned with the strong ethos and values of both organisations. With DCMS funding supporting the project, this vision quickly became a reality for the young people at Park Hall.
Based at the school during term time, with additional activities taking place at Birmingham Stirling Sea Cadet Unit during weekends and school holidays, the division officially opened its doors to cadets in May. This flexible model has enabled young people to access high-quality cadet experiences while remaining closely connected to their school community.
Since launch, the division has appointed PO Wiffen as Divisional Officer and enrolled 12 cadets aged 12–18. Cadets meet weekly to follow the Sea Cadet training syllabus, taking part in activities such as boating, navigation, first aid, ceremonial drill, and teamwork challenges. These sessions are designed to develop discipline, resilience, and confidence, while encouraging young people to work together and support one another.
Early feedback from cadets, parents, and volunteers has been overwhelmingly positive. Young people have already begun developing new skills, growing in confidence, and taking pride in their achievements. The division has also strengthened links between the school, the local Sea Cadet unit, and the wider community.
Looking ahead, the Park Hall Sea Cadet division is planning its next intake as current cadets progress from New Entry Cadet to Cadet. Further recruitment is planned for the new academic year, with cadets gaining access to district, area, and national courses to continue developing their skills. With continued support, the division aims to grow both cadet and volunteer numbers and deepen its positive impact across the local community.
