Case Study: Discovering Heritage Through Enterprise - Savile Town Scouts' Inspiring Journey

Savile Town Scouts participated in a heritage pop-up event after being approached by a local organisation and learning about the Heritage Youth Partnership microgrants. They explored Dewsbury’s industrial past, particularly the textiles industry, as well as their own cultural and family heritage. “It shows us how to search and find out more information about our history and showcase all of that,” said one Scout.

The group split into two teams to take on an enterprise challenge: creating and selling items inspired by their heritage. This competitive task helped them develop skills in budgeting, marketing, and teamwork. One young person shared, “This task is an enterprise task. We are a team and we are trying to make the most profit.”

More than just a business challenge, the project deepened their connection to the past. “The heritage project has made a difference because you get to learn about your heritage and what hardship and struggle your ancestors went through,” one participant reflected. Another added, “It allows us to appreciate what our ancestors have done and the difficulties and everything.”
